Reading a match

Scores, why a match was capped at review, and what “also listed on” tells you.

Each match card shows the tier badge, the matched listed name, and the score as N/100. The score reflects screening similarity and the screening data available — it does not by itself establish that the screened subject is the listed party. The card’s tier is the hit’s own verdict tier, because caps and ID matches decide a hit’s verdict, not the score alone.

Why this match was capped

When a rule holds a hit below Do Not Transact, the card says so — “Held below 85:” followed by the reason in plain words. The reasons are:

weak_alias
It matched an alias that the list itself marks as weak or low quality.
common_name_no_corroboration
It is a common name, and no date of birth or ID number confirms it is the same person.
dob_mismatch
The date of birth given does not match the one on the list.
multi_to_single
Apart from generic business words, only one word of the company name is left, and it is not distinctive.
one_shared_word
The two names share only one word.
missing_distinctive_word
The listed name has a distinctive word that the screened name does not contain.
type_mismatch
The listed record is a different kind of subject (person, company or vessel) from the one screened.
generic_overlap_only
The names share only general words (such as 'bank' or 'company') and a country name, with no distinctive name in common.
contact_detail_match
The website, email address or phone number given matches the one on the list. A contact detail alone does not identify the subject, so this needs review.
id_match_name_differs_verify_country
The ID number matches one this record lists, but the name differs. These numbers are only unique within the issuing country — check the country.
id_match_name_differs_verify
The ID number matches one this record lists, but the name differs — verify the ID type and who issued it.
id_match_reassignable
The identifier matches one this record lists, but it can be reassigned (vessel radio identifier, aircraft registration) — verify the IMO number or the aircraft serial number.

A hit found by its ID number alone, under a different name, is not capped: it carries the note “ID match: The ID number given matches one this record lists, although the name entered differs from the listed name.”

Also listed on

One card covers one designation, however many lists carry it. When the same party appears on several lists, the card lists each additional record under “Also listed on” with its list, source ID, the name as listed there when it differs, the listing date, its score and tier, and its sanction program when it differs from the primary record’s.

The card also shows what the lists give for the designation: known aliases, listed countries, the date of birth with the lists that agree on it, the IDs with the lists that publish them, and the listing date. Where a list publishes nothing, the report says “Not provided by source” (or “Not published by OFAC” for OFAC designation dates) — values are never filled in.
